Trying to upgrade office to 12.1.0 I get the message that no software is found on that volume (only volume!)... so the upgrade fails

Yeah, this happens to a few folks, but it's not usually insurmountable. For
some reason the installer is trying to locate Office on the same virtual
disk it came from:-)

Try the fix here & reply back if you have any further problems:

Unfortunately, this won't work for 12.1.0 - it's a fix for 12.0.1 (note the subtle difference in placement of the ".1"

I tried all of this with 12.1 - also tried putting the installer on a different volume (usb external disk). All come back saying that I cannot install on *any* of my volumes.

I've been fighting with this for more than a week. Someone's got to do something...

You can also get this error if you have modified Office or your system as
described here.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/update.html#modify>

There are certain parameters to what will upgrade (name, location, and items
in the folder have to remain the same as installed). If you install and then
immediately upgrade without restarting then the update will fail.

Fix when you have modified files:

Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash, and then reinstall
Office 2008 from your original installation disk. Restart. Update. Restart.
Repair Permissions. (restarting is important)
